After spending five years in Taiwan and Japan, he returned to Australia to take up a post at the University of Sydney, where he taught Chinese language, literature and history until his retirement in 2000. He has been studying Huayen Buddhism for thirty years and was the first president of the Huayen Buddhist Community of Australia.
